#StandWithFarmers: A week of solidarity | January 23-31

Farmers and indigenous peoples around the world are under escalating attacks but we are fighting back. Despite COVID-19 and the lockdowns at its wake, we march as one.

Stand with Farmers is a week-long call to support and link arms in solidarity with the peasants globally. In particular, we are standing to condemn the 3 Farm Acts in India, the brutal massacre in the Philippines, and the mass arrests of farmers in Cambodia.

In a momentous display of collective power, Indian farmers from around the country launched and sustained simultaneous strikes and marches protesting the Three Farm Acts and other enacted neoliberal reforms in India. On January 26, farmers will once again storm the capital to denounce the Modi government in causing ten rounds of deadlock in the dialogues and for the violent dispersals in various parts of India.

In the Philippines, the Duterte administration closed the year 2020 with a ruthless massacre in Panay Island – killing nine indigenous Tumandok while arresting 17 more. This week, farmers in Bulacan, Bataan, and Laguna woke up to simultaneous evictions and demolition of farmlands. In addition, 17 farmers were arrested in Norzagaray, Bulacan – mostly women farmers – following an uprooting of their banana trees. On January 22, farmers from all over the Philippines will march to the capital to condemn these senseless attacks and demand justice. January 29 will also be the Global Day of Action in Solidarity to Tumandok Massacre Victims.

In Cambodia, three more community peasant leaders were arrested on the cusp of the New Year in Preah Sihanouk and Tbong Khmum. In addition, more than 50 farmer and land activists were indicted since the end of 2020 to early 2021. Farmer organizations and CSOs denounced these arrests and since forwarded an appeal calling for the Royal Government of Cambodia and courts to drop all charges against land activists and community leaders.
