Salute to SPFT’s 10th year anniversary

The People’s Coalition on Food Sovereignty (PCFS) extends its warmest solidarity to Southern Peasants Federation of Thailand (SPFT) in its 10th year anniversary!

The Coalition shares the joy of SPFT for marking this milestone. Its land occupation campaigns in the past decade are an inspiration to the rural peoples’ movement in Asia and all over the world. SPFT lives on to champion the rights of the poor and landless in Thailand in the face of corporate-driven development aggression and state-sponsored repression.

We recognize the collective efforts of SPFT and its communities in reclaiming, developing, and defending their land amid ongoing lawsuits and armed intimidation from the palm oil company that formerly had a stake over it. The Klongsai Patthana and Permsap villages in Surat Thani province, Thailand are testaments to the power and effectiveness of solid organizing guided by the correct political and social analysis in the struggle for food sovereignty.

We are witness to the victories of SPFT. Our members and networks spent a week in Klongsai Patthana village last October. We learned from their stories and militant struggles. PCFS is truly grateful of SPFT for hosting the exchange program we jointly organized with the Asian Peasant Coalition (APC) and the Youth for Food Sovereignty (YFS), along with our respective general assemblies.

PCFS commends the principled leadership of SPFT in forwarding the rights of landless Thai peasants while teaching them to be steadfast and self-reliant. Likewise, we honor the martyrs of SPFT who were killed at the height of their struggle in 2012. We remember them as we demand to stop the killing of farmers and the end of impunity, a timely call in light of the International Human Rights Day commemoration last December 10.

Let us continue to advance the rural people’s movement toward the realization of people’s food sovereignty. Salute to SPFT! Long live international solidarity! ###
